Summary of the Figures Used in the Meta-Analyses

In this post I’m going to pick up where I left off in the previous post and summarise which outcome measures the meta-analyses used as well as the instances where there are minor or major errors (in my opinion).  The purpose of this post is to look at overall consistency and correctness

  • ‘M’ = major CHD/CVD events
  • ‘T’ = total CHD/CVD events
  • ‘E’ = number of CHD/CVD events (multiple events in one participant is counted each time)
  • ‘P’ = number of participants who have had CHD/CVD events (multiple events in one participant is counted once)
  • ‘X’ = the outcome measure was reported in the trial.  Merged cells are where the two numbers are equal to each other (e.g. CHD and CVD mortality in RCOT are both 5 vs. 1).  Some assumptions about merged cells are made regarding the merged cells with RCOT and STARS that: E=P
  • Grey cells = excluded either the whole trial, the outcome measure (Chowdhury, et al didn’t analyse CHD mortality or total mortality)
  • Yellow cells = the outcome measure the meta-analysis used and where the numbers are correct
  • Orange cells = the outcome measure the meta-analysis used, but was slightly incorrect (minor difference in numbers, RR, etc)
  • Red cells = the outcome measure the meta-analysis used, but was substantially incorrect (large difference in numbers or RR, omitting relevant endpoints)
